Six Year Old Birthday Party
A birthday party for a school of six year olds. The host was a father that had no companion because of death. His son meant a lot to him but there was something missing. We all gather around the card tables situated in a yellow walled basement. Screaming, eating sweets that ran out of clear bottles. Scarfing the cake that was cut by a dirty tennis shoe.
Dad, “do you remember the time we wiped out the whole regiment of Germans that crossed our back alley?”. He replied with a sad grin, “ yes son I do”. Our reward was a shiny black German lugger that is upstairs. Dad, “ do you mind if I show Jon our prize? “. “No, but be careful”. The party carried on downstairs as we went up. His father was dying.
Winding our way upstairs he repeated the story again about the lousy Germans. He then dashed for the bottom drawer and pulled out the black gun and aimed it straight at my head. “ Don’t move or I’ll blast your head off “. “ I never kill a man without giving him a chance “ he said. He then through me a forty-five. I dove for the gun slid under the bed and released four shots killing him dead .
“I didn’t know you were so good “ as he pulled himself off the floor. I just grinned and then we went back to the party.
His father was pail and drawn but always had a smile on his face. “ Go down and finish the rest of the ice cream and cake, Private, or I will have you court marshaled . ” We laughed and cornered the basement stairs to join the rest of the sticky faces. “ Let me go, let me go” came the slurred words from Billy a down syndrome kid that was forced to eat cake. Grabbing his strength he was let loose only to throw a dirty tennis shoe into the half eaten birthday cake. Ha ha ha ha….. echoed in the chambered walls.
